QUEEN'S JUBILEE MEDAL 9-1

It will have been noticed that in the report of the unveiling of Queen Alexandra's statue (see 24-1-35) mention was made of the fact that Coronation medals had been issued locally in 1902, being paid for out of the Coronation fund raised in Hongkong. They were "freely distributed," according to the records, and must have formed acceptable souvenirs.

In view of the forthcoming celebration of the silver jubilee of King George and Queen Mary, and the report some time ago that a jubilee medal is to be distributed from Home, it is interesting to find that when Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee was celebrated here, certain residents who had helped in various ways were presented in due course with medal 3, struck specially for the occasion.

Owing to the historic interest attaching to the event, I reproduce the report of the proceedings in full.

The Hongkong Telegraph of Saturday, December 11, 1897, states:

At the request of H.E. the Governor (Sir William Robinson) a number of prominent citizens assembled at Government House at noon to-day to be presented with medals awarded by His Excellency in recognition of services rendered during the present celebration of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee. The presentation was made in the drawing room.

His Excellency said:- "Gentlemen, I have asked you to come here to-day in order that I might have the pleasure of presenting to you in person the medals I have had struck commemorating her Majesty's Jubilee. Medals have been struck in Trinidad, Ceylon and other Colonies, and it occurred to me that Hongkong would not like to be left in the lurch. These medals are to show that the Government appreciates most fully what you have done. Of course, it was hard to distinguish who should receive gold or silver medals, but I hope on this occasion you will not look at their intrinsic value but on account of the honour which it conveys on all who were connected with this historical event. I will now read you a list of those who will receive gold medals.'

His Excellency then made special reference to the services of Major General Black, the Hon. Mr. C.J. Chater, Mr. Fung Wa-chuen, the Hon. Mr. J.H. Stewart Lockhart, Hon. Mr. F.H. May, Mr. T. Jackson, Mr. H.N. Mody, Comdr. Ramsey and Hon. Mr. Woodhouse. He presented the following with gold medals:

Mr. F.H. May, C.M.G., Mr. H.N. Mody, the Hon. Comdr. R. Murray Ramsey, and the Hon. Mr. H.B. Woodhouse, C.M.G.

Silver medals were presented to: The Hon. Mr. E.R. Belilios, C.M.G., Mr. W.G. Bentley, Lt. Buzzard, R.A., Mr. J.G.T. Burkle, Hon. Mr. J.J. Bell-Irving, Hon. Mr. T.H. Whitehead, Mr. G.
